黄泉の譲り葉 Translation

A translation of DELUHI’s “Yomi no Yuzuriha” from their debut single “Surveillance”.

“Yuzuriha” is a daphne plant native specifically to Asia, mostly southern Japan and Korea. Its English name is “false daphne”, and since there is no not-awkward way to translate it in this song, I left the mention of it with its Japanese name. In the Japanese language of flowers, yuzuriha’s meaning is “rejuvenation” or “alteration of generations” – something you see at the very end of the song.

朽ちてゆくその命を摘む
繰り返す永遠の螺旋
Kareteyuku araki no hana
Muragaru mushi ha retsu wo nashite
Kuchiteyuku sono inochi wo tsumu
Kurikaesu Towa no rasen
Lines of insects swarm upon
The flower in the crumbling castle.
I'll pluck up that rotting life
That spirals in neverending eternity.

 

嗄れてゆく幼き声は
消えてゆく吐息嘆いた
最期の言葉を受け入れて
亡骸の上誓いを植えた
Kareteyuku osanaki koe ha
Kieteyuku toiki nageita
Saigo no kotoba wo ukeirete
Nakigara no ue chikai wo uete
My childlike voice that's growing hoarse
Disappears as I scream and cry.
Accepting these final words,
I take a vow on the corpse.

 

降りしきる雨に濡れ
凍えてゆく感覚もなく
夢の中彷徨って
芽を開く時を待つ
光に照らされるまで
Furishikiru ame ni nure
Kogoeteyuku kankaku mo naku
Yume  no naka samayotte
Me wo hiraku toki wo matsu
Hikari ni terasareru made
Wet in the rain that falls down,
My senses won't freeze.
Wandering in dreams,
I wait for the time when the sprouts will bloom,
Until I'm illuminated in light.

運命を終えて母なる大地へ還る
ユラユラ揺らめく翳りゆく精神に安らぎを
寄せては返す波折りが新たな生命を創る
Kirakira kagayaku hai ni naru karada ni nemuri wo
Sadame wo oete hahanaru daichi he kaeru
Yurayura yurameku kageriyuku kokoro¹ ni yuragi wo
Yosete ha kaesu nami ori ga arata na inochi² wo tsukuru
The life sleeps in the body that turned to glittering ash
And will return to its mother earth.
The tranquility that trembles in the shading spirit
Returns in waves, and prays for a new life to be made.

 

乾いた風舞い散る花弁
死者の雨露草木に運び
満ちてゆく月の光浴びて
儚き時に根を張り生きる
Kawaita kaze maichiru hanabira
Shisha no uro soumoku ni hakobi
Michiteyuku tsuki no hikari abite
Hatanaki toki ni ne wo hariikiru
The fallen flower petals that dance in the dry wind
Flutter to the dew-wet plants of the dead.
Bathing in the light of the waxing moon,
They set down roots in the fleeting time and live.

 

乾いた頬に泪の痕
空に向かい育つ黄泉の譲り葉
哀しき絆 餞に
思い出の岸佇む迷い子
Kawaita hoho ni namida no ato
Sora ni mukai sodatsu yomi no yuzuriha
Kanashiki kizuna Hanamuke ni
Omoide no kishi tatazumu mayoigo
The tear-path dries on your cheeks.
The Hadean yuzuriha that were raised facing the sky
Are the bonds of grief, the farewell gift
To the lost child that wanders on the banks of memory.

 

風は凪ぎ星の灯りは消え
瞳に映る暗闇を辿る
蛍宿す屍を道標に
弔いの花が咲く場所へ
Kaze ha nagiboshi no akari ha kie
Hitomi ni utsuru kurayami wo tadoru
Hotaru yadosu shikabane wo michishirube ni
Tomurai no hana ga saku basho he
The wind puts out the light of the calm stars
And traces over the darkness reflected in your eyes.
The dead bodies of the fireflies signal
The way to the place where burial flowers bloom.
