Translation

A translation of the GazettE’s “泣ヶ原 (Nakigahara)” from their studio album “DIM”. This is my one favourite from the album, and I could listen to it endlessly. Ruki insists that Nakigahara is a real place, or so I hear, and whether or not it’s a name for some mythical place after death, I don’t know at current. The name translates to “Field of Tears”, which is precisely what the lyrics speak of: a place without hope, where one only laments and sinks deeper into depression and madness after they die.

One of the bits that I particularly like in this song is the use of the koto in the bridges – it gives it that oriental, but slightly mournful and menacing, feel. Ruki’s broken vocals here only help complete the desolate sound, and to be honest, his voicework in this song is probably my favourite in a piece to date.

Please do not steal this translation or use it without my permission. All rights belong to the GazettE and their label, PS Company.

Ansoku ni kurueru haruiro Wasureteshimaeru mono naraba
Kyuukai no bi ni ryoume shizume Tada Kodoku na no da to waraeru
Genjitsu wo korosu kikite yori
Tayasuku kizu wo kitsukereta darou
Na wo umete
If I could just forget the spring colours1 that go mad with ease,
I could sink my eyes into the beauty of decay, and say, "It's merely isolation," confidently with a laugh.
Eaten by the spring colours for the third time, holding my breath, I swim in mire.
Thrashing my legs, I drown in a trifling thought:
More than the reality I killed myself,
It's the wounds that scarred me
That bury my name. Right...?

Fuhai shita ne ga minamo yurasu Yugamu you ni mawaru haguruma
Subete ha kinku no asai umi Azayaka to mimachigaeru hodo Kegare
Decayed roots disturb water's surface, and cogwheels turn as if distorted.
The grating sounds sink into my ears, and I wonder if I'm going mad in such
beauty?
Everything is a shallow sea of taboo words, so filthy I can mistake it for
brilliance.

Sayounara Muhou no yami ni ochiteyuku
Sayounara Kore de owari
Goodbye. I'll fall into lawless darkness.
Goodbye. This is the end.2

Namida Doukoku no ame Kyomu to mukiau tabi afure
Tsuzuru kotoba ga nijimu
Namida Itsuka ha kare Seijaku ni korosareru
Kage fumi no owari ni chimayoi
Tears, the rain of grief, that overflow when I face nothingness.
The words I composed run together.
Tears... someday they will dry, and I will be killed in the silence.
In the end where shadows tread, I'll lose my mind.

Fuhai shita ne ga minamo yurasu Yugamu you ni mawaru haguruma
Kishimu ne ni mi wo nage kizuita Sore to niteiru koto ni kizuita
Decayed roots disturb water's surface, and cogwheels turn as if distorted.
I realized I was throwing my body towards the grating sounds... I realized
it was something like that.

2(repeat)

Namida Doukoku no ame Kyomu to mukiau tabi afure
Tsuzuru kotoba ga nijimu
Namida Kodoku to chiru Seijaku ni ikiru nara
Nido to waraenu you ni kizande
Tears, the rain of grief, that overflow when I face nothingness.
The words I composed run together.
Tears... They scatter into loneliness. If I live in silence,
Then the fact that I can never smile again will be engraved....

Notes
1.
The kanji officially ready “harushoku” (“spring scenery”), but the second kanji can be read “iro” (“colour”), which Ruki does in the vocals. Since he does, I wrote it as “spring colours”.
2. Ruki repeats this part in the actual song, but it isn’t written into the lyrics booklet.
3. This phrase is not included in the lyrics booklet.
4. This “watashi” is present in the song but not in the lyrics booklet, and is cut off before it can fully be completed.
